The desert sun beat down, turning the red rock canyon into a fiery oven. Stephen, his backpack heavy, squinted at the shimmering horizon. "Are you sure this is the way, Lara?" he called over his shoulder, his voice a little hoarse.
Lara, nimble and quick, was already halfway up a steep, dusty incline. "Positive! The map says a shortcut through Whispering Canyon leads straight to the old lookout point. Less time in this heat." She paused at the top, shielding her eyes. "Just a little further, then a clear path, I promise!"
Stephen grumbled good-naturedly and began his ascent. They were on a hiking trip, hoping to catch the famous desert sunset from a high vantage point. Whispering Canyon was known for its unique rock formations that sometimes made a low, eerie sound when the wind blew just right.
As they dropped into the canyon, the air instantly felt cooler, the red walls towering above them, blocking out much of the harsh sun. The ground beneath their feet was soft sand, making each step a little harder.
"It's quiet," Stephen noted, his voice echoing slightly.
"Too quiet," Lara murmured, her eyes scanning the intricate rock faces. Suddenly, a low rumble vibrated through the ground. Not the wind, not a whisper. It was deeper, more insistent.
"What was that?" Stephen asked, his hand instinctively going to Lara's arm.
Before Lara could answer, a shower of pebbles rained down from above. Then, a larger stone bounced off a ledge nearby. The rumbling intensified, sounding like a giant beast stirring.
"Rockslide!" Lara yelled, her eyes wide. She pointed frantically ahead. "We have to move! Quickly!"
A section of the canyon wall, high above them, began to crack. Dust plumed, and rocks, small at first, then larger, began to break free, tumbling down towards their narrow path.
"This way!" Stephen grabbed Lara's hand. He spotted a small, dark crevice in the opposite wall, barely wide enough for them to squeeze into. "Go!"
Lara didn't hesitate. She darted forward, scrambling towards the opening. Stephen was right behind her, his gaze fixed on the cascading rocks. The ground shook violently now, and the air filled with the deafening roar of falling stone.
Just as Lara squeezed into the crevice, a boulder the size of a small car crashed down, narrowly missing her heels, sending a shockwave of dust and displaced air that slammed into Stephen. He stumbled, his shoulder hitting the hard rock wall, but he pushed through, diving headfirst into the crevice just as the main torrent of rocks thundered down, sealing off the canyon entrance behind them.
They coughed, trying to clear the dust from their lungs. Safe, for now, in the tight, dark space. Lara was breathing heavily, her heart pounding. "That was... too close," she whispered.
Stephen nodded, rubbing his shoulder. "Definitely closer than I ever want to be again. Good call on this hideout, though." He looked at her, a grin breaking through the dirt on his face. "Looks like our shortcut just got a little longer."
Lara managed a shaky laugh. "Well, at least it's cooler in here. Now, how do we get out?"
The sound of the rockslide had faded, replaced by an unsettling silence. But both Stephen and Lara knew one thing for sure: their adventure was far from over.
